Experimental Printmaking explores the dynamic intersection of traditional printmaking techniques and innovative, unconventional approaches to create expressive imagery and unique mark-making. This course begins with a survey of foundational printmaking methods, such as relief, lithography, and screen printing, focusing on their technical execution. Students will then dive into experimental processes, embracing a “controlled range of unpredictability” to push the boundaries of image-making. Techniques include ink/gouache resist printing, aluminum foil lithography, stocking screen printing, xerox transfers, oil pastel resist, oil pastel transfers, gel plate prints, monoprinting, plexiglass etching, etching pastes, and nontraditional relief printing. Emphasis is placed on mechanical innovation and creative exploration rather than exact reproducibility, encouraging students to develop distinctive visual voices through bold experimentation.
