Description

Eugene Delacroix famously said, “If you are not skillful enough to sketch a man jumping out of a window in the time it takes him to fall from the fourth story to the ground, you will never be able to produce great works.”
What did he mean?!

Is that possible?!

In this class we will dive headlong into these energies. Engaging motion, weight, energy, and a variety of materials we will approach the figure in a way that is tragically disappearing from modern fine art education. There will be a slideshow presentation of historical examples. We will move at the pace of your progress. And you will be left with numerous options to continue with what you have perhaps only begun to taste.

From Figure Drawing, by Nathan Goldstein:
“It seems, then, that the vitality and expressive impact of the best drawings cannot be explained solely in terms of facility, cultural ideals, accuracy, narrative theme, or composition. To understand why certain figure drawings, have the power to please, provoke, and inspire us, we must begin by recognizing that each of us responds to far more than their representational or figurative content. All such works possess a dynamic “life” – a network of visual relationships and energies between the drawn marks and between the forms they produce…”

This class is in specific response to area artists and students who, despite their dedication to anatomy and proportion, feel that need for “something more…”
