Laguna College of Art + Design’s (LCAD) Summer Artists in Residence program gives outstanding artists an opportunity to pursue their studio practices in a supportive and stimulating environment in the midst of Laguna Beach’s busy festival season, which ensures the public frequent interactions with notable emerging professional artists. LCAD’s 2017 Summer Artists in Residence are Cody Jimenez and James Thistlethwaite.
Cody Jimenez is an artist from from Las Cruces, NM and a recent alumnus of LCAD’s MFA program in Painting (2017). Imbued with colorful animism, mysticism and totemism, Jimenez’s paintings are primarily about humankind’s mercurial relationship with the natural world. Endlessly inquisitive and explorative, Jimenez uses animalistic forms and vibrant psycho-emotive colors to aid viewers in understanding his paintings and the impact of anthropocentrism on the world at large.
James Thistlethwaite is a British artist and a recent alumnus of LCAD’s MFA program in Painting (2017) currently living in California and working with pencil and other dry mediums. Before commencing his graduate studies at LCAD, Thistlethwaite worked with artists such as Kehinde Wiley and world renowned street artist Ben Eine. He also has done freelance illustration, and graphic design work for clients and agencies such as the NYTimes, Red Bull and music and fashion impresarios.
