From fluency in these skills, our students achieve extraordinary mastery in an array of both traditional and technical media and techniques.
Their work includes comic and fantasy art, environment design, 3-D, character design, digital work, and much more. Our program teaches students to give life to ideas and to build complex visual narratives. These highly marketable skills are applied to entertainment, editorials, children’s books, story boarding, and comic books.
The LCAD illustration major offers four programs: Illustration, Illustration with Emphasis in Drawing & Painting, Illustration with Emphasis in Entertainment and Entertainment Design BFA. Illustration emphasizes various print and digital applications where rich imagery communicates a product, service or story. Illustration with Emphasis in Drawing & Painting concentrates on figuration to prepare students for exhibition and narrative storytelling. Illustration with Emphasis in Entertainment deals with character, animal, environment design, and storytelling.
Entertainment Design BFA furthers entertainment emphasis by addressing areas that include: Set design, staging, amusement park, ride design, event design, 3D, model making and prop design.
Our department is rich with industry talent and our faculty continues to practice in industry.
Their credits include Shrek, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Open Season. Prominent guest illustrators have included: Federico D’Alessandro, Brad Holland, Anita Kunz, William Stout, James Gurney, John Jude Palencar, and Gregory Manchess.
Each semester, illustration seniors receive a portfolio critique from leading industry professionals. Last year’s participants included:
Michael Humphries: Clients Include: Disney Feature Animation and Sony Pictures. Projects include: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, The Rescuers Down Under, The Great Mouse Detective, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Brother Bear, and Home on the Range. Michael’s Art Director credits include, “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” from Fantasia 2000 and Disney musical shorts, “One by One” and Academy Award nominated “The Little Match Girl”. Michael was nominated for an Annie Award for his achievement as Production Designer for Sony Pictures
Greg Spalenka: Clients include: Time Magazine, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Playboy, The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, The Atlantic, Harpers, Forbes and The New York Times. Entertainment projects have included: Prince Caspian: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Escape from Planet Earth , The Golden Compass and The Ant Bully.
James Martin: Clients Include: Dreamworks Animation – Dragons 2, Puss in Boots, How to train your Dragon, Shrek 4, Around the World in Eighty Days, Cat in the Hat and many others.
LCAD Illustration alumni have gone on to apply their skills to a wide range of areas and companies that have included: Creative Co-Op Inc., Dreamworks Animation, Warner Bros., Obsidian Entertainment, Microsoft Studios, Applied Medical, MARVEL Entertainment, Meteor Games, Coast Kids Magazine, Hive Gallery, Spectral Motion Inc, High Moon Studios, Blizzard Entertainment, and Interplay Entertainment.

Illustration Program Mission:
The illustration program provides students the necessary communication design, conceptual and technical abilities in the process of creating effective content for various print and digital applications where rich imagery is used to communicate a concept for a product, service or story, supported by a program of general studies. This program will enable them to pursue career opportunities in a broad range of areas. Additionally, it will challenge, strengthen and provide a context within which students may develop a personal voice.
