Description

Join us for a hands-on experience in plein-air landscape painting, where we will guide you through the process of creating a beautiful landscape painting from start to finish. In this course, you will learn how to select and set up your equipment, and discover the essential materials needed to achieve stunning results. Through a combination of demonstrations and personalized instruction, we will explore the various techniques used in plein-air painting.

Our focus is on the creative process, rather than on producing a finished piece. We will help you overcome the challenges that arise during the painting process, from selecting the perfect subject to applying paint to the canvas. We will discuss the importance of composition and design, emphasizing the simplification of shapes and values, as well as the use of color harmony and texture.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced painter, this course will inspire you to explore the beauty of the outdoors and capture it on canvas. Come and join us for an unforgettable plein-air painting experience!

Students of all levels of experience are welcome.

Suggested Materials

Supplies

  • Sturdy portable palette or Travel Easel – Try to find a gray or toned glass palette, or make one. White palettes are more difficult to work from.
  • Brushes: 5-6 of various sizes Oil Bristle Brushes/flats & or Filberts # 2, 4, 6, 8

One or two small round acrylic brushes for detail work. I also use soft, low-priced watercolor mops 1/2″- 1″ wide.

Paints
Oils: Professional paints (Gamblin) are best, but any brand will work. Hues are ok.

  • Cad Red Light (or similar)
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cad Yellow Medium (or similar)
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Viridian Green
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Titanium White

Other Materials:

  • Odorless Thinner – Gamsol or similar
  • Sealable unbreakable thinner container for brush washing
  • Nitrile gloves – not latex. Latex deteriorates with thinner.
  • Paper Towels/Blue shop towels (Costco/ Lowes) are the best
  • Plastic bags for trash (grocery bags work well)
  • Palette knives – 2 or 3 different shapes
  • Acrylic Primed Canvas Boards or Linen mounted to panels. Or primed Wood Panels
    • 5 – 8 (more if you are a fast painter) small canvases/stretched or panels/8×10 inches up to 12×16 Inches (our goal is to accomplish small, simple studies, not large finished works). If you are new to painting, we recommend paintings no larger than 9×12 inches.
