This painting course builds on the fundamental skills that students have attained in their
foundation courses. Prompts and set-ups are designed to challenge students’ facility
with paint, while exploring a variety of concepts related to memory and optics. There is
an emphasis on process, over fidelity to the referent. The readings in this course, while
light, complement the in-class and at-home assignments by focusing on phenomenology,
process, and how artists create meaning in their work.
