Color Comprehension explores the perceptual, theoretical, and expressive dimensions of color in representational painting. Through structured exercises and extended projects, students develop a deeper understanding of color relationships, value structure, and light effects as they relate to form and space. Additionally, students will develop their language of describing the subtleties of color to achieve a nuanced command for navigating the “color space.” Emphasis is placed on observational and conceptual color mixing and developing a personal sensitivity to color harmony, color shifting, and contrasts. The course integrates both traditional color theory and contemporary practices with an emphasis on expressive intention.
