Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD) Typography II Students Receive Award of Excellence in Communication Arts 2016 Typography Competition; Awarded Inclusion in January/February 2017 Issue
Students of Laguna College of Art + Design’s Typography 2 class (within the Graphic Design + Digital Media BFA program) instructed by Michael Stinson received recognition from the prestigious 2016 Typography Competition held by Communication Arts, a noted graphic design journal publishing the best in visual communications from around the world since 1959.
The award-winning entry is a redesigned issue of the typography publication U&lc (shorthand for Upper and lower case), originally a product of Herb Lubalin and the International Typeface Corporation published between 1970 and 1999.
Students of Laguna College of Art + Design’s Typography II class were challenged to update the design of the once-popular typography journal U&lc using fundamental typography skills. Each student re-created the banner for the cover and chose an article from a past issue to reinterpret, redesign and lay out as one spread. Each student received real, full-sized, newsprint paper copies of the redesigns from newspaperclub.com. (40 pages, 14.875″ × 20″, 1-color, collated and folded. Typefaces: Alright Sans, Harriet.)
Award winners include LCAD Typography II students Ridan Arellano, Emily Atwood, Elena Beckett, Robert Carmona, Winston Elliott, Megan Farnan, Anthony Guinnip, Dylan Harris, Claire Kairalla, Becca Kent, Kasey Kim, Alexis Lanz, Emily Layton, Sam Mazzarella, Colleen McGuire, Philip Park, Alex Serrano, Hannah Smith, Jessica Wu and Samantha Yick.
